First Time Coming to Anaheim, California – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
Grape farmers and wine makers from Bavaria founded Anaheim in 1857.  The name Annaheim, in German, means, “home by the Santa Anna River”.  An insect pest destroyed the grape industry in the 1880s.  Later, the void was filled by oranges, lemons and walnuts.  Before Disneyland, in the first half of the 20th century, Anaheim was a massive rural community of mostly orange groves and their farmers.  Rudolph Boysen, Anaheim’s first Park Superintendent from 1921 to 1950, was the creator of the hybrid berry known as the boysenberry.  The Disneyland theme park was opened to the public July 17, 1955.

TODAY
Anaheim’s most important industry, also its largest, is tourism.  The Walt Disney Company is the city’s biggest employer.  Many national conferences are held at the Anaheim Convention Center, and the numerous local hotels, particularly in the resort district, serve the many theme park tourists and convention attendees.  63% of the city’s industrial space is taken up by the Anaheim Canyon business park, making it the largest industrial district in Orange County.  There are over 55,000 workers in the 2,600 businesses in Anaheim Canyon.  Anaheim’s population was counted at 336,265 in 2010, and is predominantly white.

PRIME LOCATION
About 25 miles southeast of Downtown Los Angeles, Anaheim is located at 33°50′10″N 117°53′23″W .  The city is about 49.8 square miles of land and 1.0 square mile of water, with a total area of 50.8 square miles.

There are several districts that the city delineates as the Anaheim Resort (the area surrounding Disneyland), the Platinum Triangle (the area surrounding Angel Stadium) and The Canyon (an industrial area north of the Riverside Freeway and east of the Orange Freeway). Anaheim Hills is a more prosperous area with a median household income of $123,000 a year in 2010.

QUALITY OF LIFE
Anaheim’s current sports teams are the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks, who were 2007 Stanley Cup Champions, the MLB’s team, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who were 2002 World Series Champions, and the PASL-Pro team, the Anaheim Bolts.  The large retail centers are the Anaheim Plaza in the west, the Anaheim Town Square in the east, and the Anaheim Garden Walk lifestyle center in the Resort.

The city’s most well-known attractions are, of course, Disneyland Resort, which houses Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park, Downtown Disney, ESPN Zone, and House of Blues.  Then there is also Adventure City, Angel Stadium of Anaheim, The Grove of Anaheim, Honda Center, MUZEO art museum, American Sports Centers, the home of U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, Oak Canyon Nature Center, and Anaheim/OC Walk of Stars, to name a few.
