First Time Coming to Pasadena, California – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
The name Pasadena means, “Crown of the Valley”.  An interesting fact about the city is that Pasadena has a sizeable, non-indigenous population of about five species of naturalized parrots living there.  People are split on their response to these birds, some residents enjoy the birds as unique part of their city’s culture, yet others think them to be loud, annoying pests. Theories exist to explain the mystery of how the parrots ended up in Pasadena and claimed the area as their home.  A popular story is says that they were part of the stock that were set free from the fire at  large pet emporium at Simpson’s Garden Town on East Colorado Boulevard in 1959.

TODAY
Pasadena, a city in Los Angeles County, California, has a population of 137,122 and is the 180th-largest city in the United States.   Pasadena is very well known for hosting the annual Rose Bowl football game and the Tournament of Roses Parade .  Pasadena is also home to numerous scientific and cultural institutions; included are the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena City College (PCC), Fuller Theological Seminary, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (actually in La Cañada Flintridge), Art Center College of Design, the Pasadena Playhouse, the Pacific Asia Museum and the Norton Simon Museum of Art.

PRIME LOCATION
Pasadena’s elevation at City Hall is 864 feet above sea level.  Greater Pasadena is enclosed by the San Rafael Hills, the Raymond Fault line and the San Gabriel Mountains.  A major geographic feature of the area is the Arroyo Seco, also home of the Rose Bowl, and it flows from headwaters in the Angeles National Forest greenbelt in the San Gabriel Mountains.

The total area of the city is 23.1 square miles, and it is ten miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.  Pasadena is bordered by the  11 communities of Highland Park, South Pasadena, Eagle Rock, San Marino, Temple City, Arcadia, San Gabriel, Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge, and Altadena, although Altadena is an unincorporated part of Los Angeles County.

QUALITY OF LIFE
Pasadena is mostly known for the Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl football game, but the City also has many cultural amenities, great restaurants and top retailers.  Founded in 1862, the Pasadena Symphony gives several concerts a year at the Ambassador Auditorium and the Pasadena Pops plays at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden.  A few traveling Broadway shows visit the Civic Center each year. And then there is the famous Pasadena Playhouse that usually offers seven shows a season with each show running for six to eight weeks. There are several smaller theatre companies as well, like the Furious Theatre Company.

The Friends of the Levitt organization puts on a free summer concert series in Memorial Park.  Several venues on the Caltech campus, including Beckman Auditorium, present a range of performing arts, lectures, classes, films and entertainment events during the academic year.  Many artists of national repute, like Guy Rose, Alson S. Clark, Ernest A. Batchelder and Marion Wachtel of the Arts and Crafts Movement have made Pasadena their home in the early part of the twentieth century.
