THE COURSE
Spread out around the base of the hills on the western edge of Angeles National Forest, Angeles National Golf Course is a great choice for a relaxing morning or afternoon filled with challenging golf. The only Nicklaus Group designed golf course in the Los Angeles area, the course can be reached in less than 30 minutes from downtown L.A. with easy access to the 210 Freeway. As you approach the course you’ll see the sprawling backdrop of the National Forest and understand why the Golden Bear’s group of designers spent almost 20 years working and reworking the plans to meet extensive and strict standards put in place to ensure the layout would enhance the existing landscape. The scenery blends with expert “desert layout” style design to allow players an escape from the everyday for a few hours. After opening in June 2004, Angeles National’s championship course caught the eye of Golf Digest who put it on their “Best New Places to Play” for 2008/2009, earned a spot on Travel & Leisure Golf magazine’s “Top 30 Best New Courses Worldwide” and became another stop for qualifying rounds of PGA competition .
The course has come to be known for drawing out your best drives with longer par 4s and putting your short game and putt reading skills to the test with approachable but dynamic and fast greens. For instance, the middle third of the course kicks off with the par 3 hole #7 whose green carries the nickname “the Rollercoaster” followed by #8( deemed “The Fortress) whose par 5 green is surrounded by a fortress of bunkers. There are also two lakes, a stream, and several protected natural areas to encourage you to keep your ball in play. There are four credentialed professional instructors on staff to attend to any possible need you or your foursome may have. With decades of combined golf knowledge, their team of instructors offer well trained eyes to assist with anything from proven fundamentals of the swing to quickly spotting areas to improve within your individual mechanics and even advice on the crucial mental side of the game.
After working hard on developing good rhythm and a smooth swing, having your gear in tune is a deserved part of a lower score and a more enjoyable round. The club has joined forces with UST Mamiya through their Swing Fit Tour Van to offer onsite repair. They can regrip, reshaft, adjust the loft or weight of or otherwise repair any club usually in minutes. The mobile Van also offers custom fitting of your clubs and professional analysis of your individual swing to treat you like a Tour player. Finally, you can try out your customized clubs and begin fine tuning the input from the pros on the course’s driving range. Practice facilities include a spacious range with all grass tee boxes, chipping/putting greens and a seperate private instruction area. All rounds purchased on Saturday and Sunday before twilight hours include a bucket of range balls to help you get warmed up and e-keys provide a huge savings for the more consistent range customer.
