First Time Coming to Oxnard, California – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
Chumash Native Americans originally inhabited the area that is now Oxnard before the arrival of Europeans. Portuguese explorer Joao Rodriguez Cabrilho was the first to encounter the area and claimed it for Spain in 1542.  It was serviced during the mission period by the Mission San Buenaventura that was established in 1782.  Later, American farmers cultivated lima beans and barley there.

Naval bases Point Mugu and Port Hueneme were established in that area, prior to and during World War II,  to take advantage of the only major port on California’s coast between the Port of Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay that was navigable.  The defense-based aerospace and communications industries development were in turn encouraged by the bases.

The political activist and union leader, César Chávez spent some of his childhood in the Colonia area of Oxnard and a number of streets and schools in the region bear his name.

TODAY
Amtrak, Union Pacific, Metrolink, Greyhound, and Intercalifornia all stop in Oxnard, which is a major transportation hub in Southern California.  Oxnard even has a small regional airport called Oxnard Airport (OXR).

Oxnard grew in the mid-20th century and developed homes, retail, and industry in the areas outside the downtown along with a new harbor named Channel Islands Harbor. Martin V. (“Bud”) Smith (1916–2001) was the most influential developer in Oxnard and his first enterprise was the Colonial House Restaurant in 1941 and then the Wagon Wheel Junction in 1947.  Other projects he was involved in were the high-rise towers at the Topa Financial Plaza, the Channel Islands Harbor, Casa Sirena Resort, the Esplanade Shopping Mall, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Carriage Square Shopping Center, the Maritime Museum, and many others.
A gang injunction over a 6.6-square-mile area of the central district of the city was imposed by the Oxnard Police Department and the Ventura County Sheriff in order to restrict gang activity in 2006, and was upheld in the Ventura County Superior Court, then made a permanent law in 2005. A similar injunction was later imposed in areas of the south side of the city.

PRIME LOCATION
Oxnard is located along the Coast of Southern California approximately 35 miles west of the Los Angeles city limits, and it is a part of the larger Greater Los Angeles area. It is Ventura County’s most populous city, and the 19th most populous city in California at 203,585 people as of the 2012 Financial Report.  It is on the Oxnard Plain, an area with fertile soil, and it contains a number of important biological communities in its beaches, dunes, wetlands, creeks and rivers. Native plant communities include the coastal sage scrub and California Annual Grassland along with Coastal Dune Scrub species.

QUALITY OF LIFE
International trade, manufacturing, defense, agriculture and tourism drive the Oxnard economy, and it is one of the key manufacturing centers of the Greater Los Angeles Area. The busiest and only deep-harbor commercial port between Los Angeles and San Francisco is the Port of Hueneme and it is vital to trade with the Pacific Rim economies.

The plains of Oxnard are well known for strawberries and each year Oxnard hosts the California Strawberry Festival, where one can find strawberry nachos, strawberry pizza, strawberry funnel cake, strawberry sundaes, and strawberry champagne.

The area also has had a thriving Hip Hop and punk music scene.  Death and Thrash bands, such as Decimus and Hostile are also prominent in the region.
