First Time Coming to Glendale, California – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
The city’s population experienced significant increase from 13,756 in 1920 to 62,736 in 1930. Henry R. Harrower was a pioneering endocrinologist and entrepreneur that opened a clinic in Glendale in 1920. It was the largest business in the city for many years. In 1926 the early conservation and tree preservation society, The American Green Cross, was formed here, yet disbanded three years later. In 1964, George Lincoln Rockwell chose Glendale to be the West Coast headquarters of the American Nazi Party. Its offices were open downtown, on Colorado Street, until the early 1980s.
In 1977 and 1978 the case of the Hillside Strangler began when ten murdered women were found in and around Glendale. The killings were at the hands of Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, the latter of whom resided at 703 East Colorado Street, which is where most of the murders were.

Glendale is a city in Los Angeles County, California, with a population of about 191,719, in 2010, making it the third largest city in Los Angeles County and the 22nd largest city in the state of California.
Glendale is located at the eastern end of the San Fernando Valley, and is a suburb in the Greater Los Angeles Area, bisected by the Verdugo Mountains. To the northwest of Glendale are the Sun Valley and Tujunga neighborhoods of Los Angeles; to the northeast, La Cañada Flintridge and the unincorporated area of La Crescenta; to the west, Burbank and Griffith Park; to the east, Eagle Rock and Pasadena; to the south, the Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles; and to the southeast, Glassell Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The city is served by the Ventura, Glendale, and Foothill freeways.
Many notable celebrities and local residents’ remains are contained at Glendale’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. One of the largest Armenian communities in the United States is found in Glendale.
PRIME LOCATION
Glendale is found at the juncture of two large valleys, the San Fernando and the San Gabriel. The United States Census Bureau marks the city’s total area at 30.6 square miles, and it is bordered to the north by the foothill communities of La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, and Tujunga; to the south by the Atwater Village community; to the east by Pasadena and Eagle Rock; and to the west by the city of Burbank.
The Glendale area is crossed by several known earthquake faults, as is most of southern California. The most recognized faults by seismologists are the Sierra Madre and Hollywood faults. The last major quake along the southern San Andreas was recorded in 1857.
In the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, 31 structures in Glendale suffered major damage and had to be demolished, in addition to numerous chimneys collapsing.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Glendale’s downtown is home to companies like Nestle, Great West Life, Citi, Unum, and Cigna, who all have offices there. Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen created DreamWorks SKG, a diversified entertainment company in 1994. The city’s Grand Central Business Park is the location of DreamWorks Animation. The Walt Disney Company also has a large campus there that includes the headquarters for The Muppets Studio and Marvel Studios.
The Bob’s Big Boy chain of hamburger restaurants started in Glendale in 1936, and the Baskin-Robbins, “31 Flavors” chain of ice cream parlors began in Adams Square in 1945.
