First Time Coming to Burbank, California – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
The city of Burbank is part of two Spanish and Mexican-era colonial land grants. The city got its name from Dr. Burbank, a dentist that migrated in the 1850s and later purchased property. Dr. Burbank also owned the Burbank Theatre that cost $150,000 and opened November 27, 1893. It became nationally known for staged plays, even though it was first meant to be an opera house. Famous actors at the time, Fay Bainter and Marjorie Rambeau, appeared there until the theater deteriorated into a burlesque house.
TODAY
Located in Los Angeles County in Southern California, Burbank is 12 miles to the north of downtown Los Angeles. In 2010 the estimate population was 103,340. Burbank, just a few miles from Hollywood, has been called the “Media Capital of the World” with many entertainment and media companies headquarters there, including Warner Bros. Entertainment, Warner Music Group, The Walt Disney Company and Nickelodeon. The city’s air travel is through the Bob Hope Airport. Burbank Boulevard has been experiencing a makeover started in 2007, where the city spent over $10 million for a new median, new lights, palm trees, colorful flowers, benches and bike racks. Every day an estimated 100,000 people go to work in Burbank.
PRIME LOCATION
Burbank is 17.4 square miles bordered by Glendale on the east, North Hollywood and Toluca Lake on the west, and Griffith Park to the South, with the Verdugo Mountains forming a northern border. City elevations range from 500 feet in lower valley regions to 800 feet near the mountains. Burbank has two distinct areas, the downtown, civic center and key neighborhoods on the slopes and foothills of the Verdugo Mountains, and other areas in the flatlands at the east end of the San Fernando Valley.
Laugh-In and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson referred to it as “Beautiful Downtown Burbank. Burbank is in a seismically active area with at least 8 major faults within 13.5 miles of the civic center. Its San Fernando Fault caused the 6.6 magnitude 1971 San Fernando Earthquake, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake caused the city $66.1 million in damages.
QUALITY OF LIFE
The area’s motion picture, digital cinema and television studios employ many Burbank residents. The defense industry has mostly been replaced by the entertainment industry, which is attracted by the relative safety and security of the city’s own police and fire departments, in addition to highly rated schools and hospital. Many appreciate the city’s small-town feel, yet 10 minutes away proximity to the popular clubs and restaurants in Hollywood.
Burbank’s involvement and support for many local nonprofit organizations certainly enhance the quality of life there. Local residents, government and business owners have built an organizational network providing support of homeless services, health and social services, employment, education and after-school activities.
The Rancho Equestrian District is a notable collection of neighborhoods with Griffith Park to the south, Victory Boulevard to the east, Alameda Avenue to the north and Olive Avenue to the west. In this area the zoning allows horses to be kept on residential property, and many homes have stables.
