First Time Coming to Ranch Cucamonga, California – Did You Know?

YESTERDAY
Before the land development boom of the late 20th century, the landscape consisted of farms, ranches and orchards predominantly.  In 1970, the population was only 5,796, so development of the area has been swift.  The old orchards have given way to mostly residential areas and now office parks, distribution centers, malls, shopping strips and manufacturing companies. Tamco Steel, the only steel mini-mill in California, makes its home here.

TODAY
The San Bernardino County suburban city of Rancho Cucamonga has a population of 165,269 (2010) up from 127,743 reported in 2000.  The residents of the unincorporated communities of Alta Loma, Etiwanda, and Cucamonga voted to incorporate in 1977.  The Inland Empire Utilities Agency erected the first wind turbine in Rancho Cucamonga on 29th November 2011.

In popular culture, the city has received some references or notoriety, for example, it is the setting in the movie Next Friday with the home of Uncle Elroy and Day Day being in Rancho Cucamonga.  More recently, it is the setting for the Comedy Central show Workaholics where they nicknamed it “Hollywood East”.  The main characters share a home in the residential suburbs of Rancho Cucamonga.

PRIME LOCATION
Rancho Cucamonga sits at the intersection of the Old Spanish Trail, the Mohave Trail, the Santa Fe Trail, El Camino Real and the former Route 66 (now Foothill Boulevard).  With a total area or 39.9 square miles, the city is about 39 miles east of Los Angeles.  It resides in the southwest corner of San Bernardino County and is ranked 3rd in population for the county.

The city is located at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains, so it has seasonal flood danger due to several streams flowing down the range.  A number of control channels and basins help protect the city and some streets have noticeably high curbs and larger storm drains grates to reduce flooding, as seen on Hermosa Avenue.

QUALITY OF LIFE
In 2006 Ranch Cucamonga was voted #42 in America as Money’s Best Places to Live.  The city has a minor-league baseball stadium, The Epicenter, which is home to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. The Quakes’ mascot, named Tremor, is a “Rallysaurus”.  Built in the eastern end of the city, at the crossing of Foothill and Day Creek Boulevards, is the Victoria Gardens lifestyle center.  It is a shopping mall created with a downtown feel, since the city had never developed a traditional downtown area.  The center has two main “streets”, anchor stores, and a cultural center with a 570 seat theater and a city library.  Southern California’s only Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World superstore is just across the street.
