First Time Coming to Riverside, California – Did You Know?
YESTERDAY
Riverside was founded in the early 1870s by John W. North, a rigid temperance-minded abolitionist from Tennessee who had also founded Northfield, Minnesota. A few years later the navel orange was planted. It was such a success that they began full-scale planting. Like its founder, Riverside was temperance minded and Republican. At the time it was founded there were four saloons in Riverside, but the license fees were increased until the saloons had to leave the town. English and Canadian investors brought prosperous traditions and activities, thus the first golf course and polo field in Southern California were in Riverside. Early citrus trees were Brazilian navel oranges from Bahia, Brazil. That type did not do well in Florida, but became a phenomenal success in Southern California.
TODAY
Riverside is now the 61st largest city in the U.S, and the 12th largest city in California. Riverside is a part of an area referred to as a “smog belt” due to an above-average air pollution level. The city has incorporated additional means of mass transit, such as Metrolink to help combat the problem along with equipping all buses with natural gas. As the local municipalities and counties collaborate with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to improve the regional air quality, smog has been considerably decreasing over the past years. It is now a thing of history to receive smog alerts. Much of Riverside’s smog problem is due to prevailing wind patterns blowing smog from the L.A. Basin and Southern California Vehicle particulates in addition to that from the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach into the Inland Empire.
PRIME LOCATION
Riverside is the county seat of Riverside County, California, and is named for its location alongside the Santa Ana River. After Fresno, Sacramento, and Bakersfield, it is the 4th largest inland California city, and it is the largest city in the Southern California Inland empire area, located about 60 miles to the east of Los Angeles. Riverside is the 12th most populous city in California and the 59th most populous city in the U.S., and it a part of the Greater Los Angeles area.
In 2010, Riverside had a population of 303,871 people, and it is the second largest city in the county behind Palm Springs at 81 square miles. Riverside is about 36 miles from the Pacific and is surrounded by different sized mountains that sometimes see some winter snow. The largest mountain and city landmark is Mount Rubidoux.
QUALITY OF LIFE
Riverside is recognized as the birthplace of the California citrus industry. The largest Mission Revival Style building in the United States, the Mission Inn is found in Riverside, along with the Riverside National Cemetery. At the northeastern part of the city is The University of California, Riverside, and it hosts the Riverside Sports Complex. The UCR Botanical Gardens has 40 acres of unusual plants with walking trails that total 4 miles.
Riverside has other attractions that include the Fox Performing Arts Center, Riverside Metropolitan Museum — housing exhibits and artifacts of local history, the California Museum of Photography, the California Citrus State Historic Park, and one of the two original navel orange trees in California, the Parent Washington Navel Orange Tree. The city has numerous museums, holds several festivals downtown during the year, and has an airshow and film festival.
